If you&#8217;re passing out candy, consider putting your pet in a separate room so they don&#8217;t accidentally slip out the door.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If trick-or-treaters at the door spook your pet, keep them in a quiet, comfortable room with a bed or crate, favorite toy, treat, or food puzzle. Some pets can benefit from having the TV or radio on. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Calming pheromone products like Adaptil spray and collars work well for dogs and cats. If anxiety is an ongoing problem, talk to your veterinarian or contact our <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfspca.org\/veterinary-care\/behavior-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Veterinary Behavior Service<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;This is also a good time to ensure that your pets are microchipped and wearing an identification tag,&#8221; said Dr. Scarlett. &#8220;Lost animals at a shelter are far more likely to find their way home if <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">they&#8217;re microchipped<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We encourage pet owners to register with a universal microchip database <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">such as<\/span> <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/petlink.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">petlink.net<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Take a current picture of your pet as an added precaution.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Additional Halloween safety tips<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Keep pets far away from fog machines. If you use them for decoration, ensure your home has plenty of ventilation, as the fumes can be toxic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Protect your pets from harmful or toxic foods and items like chocolate, raisins, gum, or candy containing xylitol. Candy wrappers, corn, candles, cords, and glow-stick decorations can also be dangerous. Signs of exposure to toxic items include drooling, vomiting, or trouble breathing.
