Teaching a dog to follow cues like \u201csit,\u201d \u201cstay,\u201d or \u201cgo to your bed\u201d allows them to learn independence. When they associate a reward (a treat and praise) with a behavior, it reinforces a positive message that performing the behavior will lead to a reward. It’s also one way to increase your human-animal bond and engage your pet with an entertaining activity you can both enjoy.<\/p>\n

Finding the right training environment for your dog<\/h2>\n

When teaching a pet new behaviors, begin in a distraction-free environment<\/strong>. Limit any interruptions from other people or animals or noise from the television or radio. You\u2019ll probably want to start training your dog indoors and move outdoors once they\u2019ve mastered the tricks. Have your training-only treats ready, or you can opt to use a clicker. Keep the interactions fun so your pet stays engaged; maintain eye contact and vary the amount of time between asking for a behavior and offering a reward (one to three seconds). The basics behind dog training<\/h2>\n

For any trick, the association you\u2019re teaching is cue, lure, behavior, and reward. Repetition is key for learning any trick. When teaching specific tricks, you\u2019ll want to integrate \u201cthe twist,\u201d which will be how to cue the behavior physically, such as motioning to their mat, luring them into a \u201csit\u201d or \u201cdown\u201d position, or instructing them to \u201cstay.\u201d<\/p>\n
