What a lot of people don\u2019t realize is they don\u2019t necessarily smell the same to your dog as they do to you, and they can pose a toxic threat to our pets. Here\u2019s what you should know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to Avoid<\/strong><br>Dogs are far more sensitive to fragrances than humans. What might seem like a harmless fragrance to you might be overwhelming for your dog. This is especially true if the fragrance is present in a small space or if it continues for an extended period. Keep this list of essential oils away from your dog\u2019s nose and out of their reach.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cinnamon<\/li>\n<li>Citrus<\/li>\n<li>Clove<\/li>\n<li>Eucalyptus<\/li>\n<li>Pennyroyal<\/li>\n<li>Peppermint<\/li>\n<li>Pine<\/li>\n<li>Sweet Birch<\/li>\n<li>Tea Tree<\/li>\n<li>Wintergreen<\/li>\n<li>Ylang Ylang<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Symptoms<br><\/strong>If your dog might &nbsp;have been exposed to essential oils (via inhalation, ingestion, or contact with skin), they could have one of several reactions. Please watch for these signs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drooling or vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Watery eyes and\/or nose<\/li>\n<li>Reddened gums, lips, or skin<\/li>\n<li>Lethargy or wobbliness (called ataxia)<\/li>\n<li>Panting, coughing, or wheezing<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty breathing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What to Do<\/strong><br>If inhaled, immediately get your dog into fresh air. This can often alleviate symptoms quickly.&nbsp;If it gets on skin\/fur, wash the area with hand-safe dish soap. Watch for symptoms once the affected area is clean. Call your veterinarian right away if the oil was ingested&nbsp;.
