In a disaster, you may have to leave your home in a hurry, so it\u2019s beneficial to have a pet \u201cgo\u201d bag by the door with essentials. Here’s what you can do to equip yourself and your pet for an emergency.<\/p>\n

Steps to prep:<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Ensure your pet has a\u00a0registered microchip<\/a>\u00a0and is wearing a visible tag with current information.<\/li>\n
  2. Designate a trusted caregiver who can take your dog or cat in an emergency if you can’t get home to your pet.<\/li>\n
  3. Research\u00a0pet-friendly, overnight options\u00a0so you know where you can go together safely if you have to evacuate.<\/li>\n
  4. One of the most important ways to prepare for an emergency\u00a0is to have an emergency\u00a0\u201cgo\u201d bag.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What to put in your \u201cgo\u201d bag:<\/h2>\n
      \n
    • A pet first-aid kit<\/li>\n
    • A sturdy leash, collar, and harness\u2014in a chaotic situation, your pet may want to run.<\/li>\n
    • Enough food for at least two weeks, including favorite treats, drinking water, and collapsible bowls.<\/li>\n
    • Any necessary medications (two weeks\u2019 worth) along with copies of medical records, photos of your pet, microchip information, and a rabies certificate; keep these stored in a waterproof baggie.<\/li>\n
    • Info on feeding schedules, medical conditions, behaviors, and the name and number of your vet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      If you do have to evacuate in a disaster, it is in your pet’s best interest to stay with you.<\/p>\n
